“Love and
compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot
survive.”- Dalai Lama. Sacrifice is the foundation on which compassion builds.
The Oxfords dictionary defines compassion as a strong feeling of sympathy for people
who are suffering and a desire to help them.
Compassion
can take place in a heart where there is love and concern for the other. Many
or I may say, most of the things we learn, come from our past experience and
knowledge.; this also applies to compassion. I really admire Jesus for the
wonderful deeds He did through the compassion that He had on people.
The first
incident that comes to my mind about Jesus having compassion on the people is
through the feeding of the 5,000 people. Jesus saw the people who were like
sheep without a shepherd, He had compassion on them. He made them sit on the
grass and we quite well know how the rest of the story follows.
The
important lesson to draw from this is that compassion leads one to action.
Compassion is dynamic; it shows forth itself by deeds done with love for the
other. Mother Teresa says: “……. It is not how much we do but how much love we
put in that action.”
